Some of the most breathtaking beaches in Puerto Escondido!

By Anita Draycott

If you ask locals to recommend a beach in Puerto Escondido, likely their first answer will be “Zicatela.” Certainly, it’s hard to compete with this world-renowned stretch of sand and surf but there are plenty more beaches to be enjoyed, depending on your pleasure.

On the south end of Zicatela, you’ll find La Punta, where waves are smaller. Hire an instructor here, start training in La Punta’s beginner-friendly waves and maybe in a few weeks you’ll be ready to tackle the famous Mexican Pipeline just as world- class surfers do.

The closest beach to town, called Playa Principal (main beach) is ideal for boogie boarding and body surfing. You’ll also find palapas where you can enjoy a beer.

West of Playa Principal you will enjoy Manzanillo and Angelito Beaches whose calm waters and sandy bottom are safest for swimming and ideal for kids and snorkeling. A lot of expats reside around here so you’ll probably hear lots of English.

In a region blessed by gorgeous beaches, Playa Carrizalillo is the beauty queen. The high cliffs and approximately 150 steps down to Carrizalillo ensure that it’s rarely crowded. It’s the perfect beach if you want to swim, snorkel and relax knowing the kids are safe.

Honeymooners, lovers and those in search of long walks, especially at sunset, will find tranquility on Bacocho beach. As you get closer to the airport you’ll have miles and miles sand and sea just for you.
