Parliament Hill
This is the home of the Canadian Federal government. It is one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in Canada, particularly during summer when the public is invited to watch the guard ceremony every day as the sound and light show takes the center stage to entertain the guests.
Byward Market
Your trip cannot be complete without visiting the Byward Market, this is an open air market that host the best of the First Nations People's carvings and curios. It is dotted with beautiful restaurants and boutiques that offer the best of Canadian shopping experience.
Chateau Laurier
The century-old Chateau Laurier is a lavish hotel that was originally under the Canadian Pacific Railway Hotel. Today it is run under the Fairmont. It is one of the most remarkable landmarks in Ottawa as it overlooks the parliament Hill and the Ottawa River. Its architectural design is remarkably similar to the French Chateau.
Gatineau Park
Although technically in Quebec, the park is considered part of Ottawa as it is 15 minutes away from the Parliament Hill. The park is a protected green zone that features over 50 species of trees, crystal clear lakes that are similar to other lakes seen in the hills of Canadian Shield, a variety of animals as well as hiking and biking trails. It is the ultimate family-day-out destination in Ottawa.
Festivals
Ottawa is not only Canada's political capital, but also its celebrations capital. On July 1st the city leads the rest of Canada in celebrating Canada Day. Other festivals held in the city include; TD Ottawa Jazz Festival, a winterlude on the world's largest skating rink, the Rideau Canal as well as smaller festivals such as the Chamberfest and Bluefest.
Ottawa always manages to surprise people. Most people expect it to be a boring, snobbish and aristocratic city due to its political power affiliations. However, this cannot be further from the truth. It is a happy, fun loving city.
